Money in Art: "Manga and Anime"

Tue Nov 21, 2006, 7:34 AM
"Money builds, money destroys"

A couple days ago Vampirepromise and me started talking about an interesting issue, very common in my opinion to the world of Arts.

Manga (the word means "casual-drawing") has become one of the biggest money industry in art forms.
It's weird how art-world goes: usually artists want to sell their work, so they can live from art, when they get money they can improve their life and be really motivated, but then usually their jobs give them restrictions and deadlines, so art is not coming from the will of the artist taken by inspiration, but from money. So money rules the artist now and ruins his/her art. It happens in many cases.

Manga is one of them, I believe there is always something to learn from great works or artistic movements, Expressionism, Pointillisme, Cubism, Art Nuveau, Pop Art, Manga, but there is absolutely to take in consideration how much the MONEY factor took place in them.

People react to things they see, and their reactions are always considered by commercial issues. Manga was born probably with good intention, to create a loose and jamming style and to be more focused on stories and characters. But manga-adoration did opposite to this art form, creating tons and tons of material who can be considered as 'TRASH' aiming only to make money out of it.

Overall I consider there is an advantage on this commercial mechanism. And it's giving job to many artists who wants to live their life making what they love the most: drawing.

What do you think about it? Let's discuss together :)
  • Mood: Peaceful
  • Listening to: sirens in the street
  • Reading: my mobile
  • Watching: a foggy day
  • Playing: with my thoughts
  • Eating: Toasts
  • Drinking: juice...again :P

It happens in all, but the manga and anime stuff is what I see it in the most. All I see anymore is the same thing being reproduced. And all it does is make money for those of whom want it. It has no character, nothing at all that can point that person out in any form. Yes there are good manga and anime that have good story lines. But honestly there seems to be nothing else to it. As for other art forms yes we do see it, but not as large scale as we do there in those two. In other forms like dark and abstract it happened similarly but not on such a great scale.

In my opinion, Japanese Manga, or all types of Asian manga if I may take that into consideration, was made for entertainment purposes. I really see no art to it, other then the backdrop that the characters themselves are placed upon. Manga was meant to have a story line be brought to life basically-there is no art to it. The only art about manga is the story line that the "artist" embelishes on. Some Manga Artists, and may I say SOME take some considerationmaking their work look like art. Otherwise Manga is just applied lines, and simple work. There is a certain "art" to it, I guess you can say but it is nothing like our fine art or modern art, sculpture and so on. It's for simple entertainment. That's all I can really comment on. Nice discussion though-the topic is fine.

I am afraid of the dark, because that's where I live. A body without meaning, my own disfigured limbs. I shall not speak of fear, but something far beyond it. A world which I've created, but in which I cannot live.--Rozz Williams
thanks for the great comment, very well thought, I put this issue also on NEWS here: [link]

Ouch! now that's a tricky question you've just posed.Art and money. Not just in Manga of course. What does one live on?The bread he eats or the air he breathes.I read in your "devious information" that your favourite artist is or was Egon Schiele and if I remember correctly (I can't remember the exact quote and am too lazy to look it up)he had something to say about restrictions applied to art and artists.(censorship in his case I think it was)He compared it to a crime,a killing of something in its bud.And we can expand on this - the "art business" that gives fame and fortune BUT who decides? Are the famous the REAL artists just through their success or does the credit go to the whole circus that puts on the "show"?And by show I don't mean a single art exhibit.
uhmmm really deep thought about the money/art scene...
Yeah Egon Schiele was imprisoned as well because they thought he was a peadophile. Naturally that was not true...they censored his art as well.
Well, I made some thoughts in all my art career and I can tell that the art business is chosen by the mass-taste.
I believe the common quote "everyone's an artist", but I guess you can have many different point of views also into this.
In drawing-art we have canons, and these canons are decided by mass as well, we could take a child who wants to draw a tree and his will and expressive marks could make something special out of this drawing. Even more than great technical and canonic drawings.
But who decide what's the best? Your eyes...and why is that? Because your mind make a relation to reality or to a cool effect of the pastel, pencil... the little child just created a magical tree on a little napkin, but who cares? Only him, it's HIS art. The perfect drawing will be the little piece of art for EVERYONE.

There are sudies about lines, proportions in Academy...other studies on colour chromatism, other studies about how the eye works and percepts the image.
All these studies are well done to build up a formal line to follow.
If you follow that line and you have some technique...you'll have success for sure.

(Yep, sometimes you need also a bit of luck ;) )
Sure, the comment that I made that you just commented on or the original thing?
